I See Black and Blue

Unless you live under a rock, you’ve heard of Thedress phenomenon. White and Gold vs. Black and Blue took over the internet and all of my social media feeds.

Other companies quickly used Thedress to advertise their brand.

But nothing can compare to Salvation Army’s new advertisement.

Underneath the ad it says “the only illusion is if you think it was her fault. One and 6 women are victims of abuse. Stop abuse against women” and was created by Ireland/ Davenport agency in Johannesburg

I just took an advertising class and we studied what makes an advertisement successful. This takes the cake. It’s simple, clear, creative and memorable. And they used a viral internet trend to send their message. Now the Salvation Army advertisement has gone viral and from what I can tell has received a lot of positive feedback.

This is the future of advertising. Using internet trends and social media to your advantage. Advertising agencies already know they have to utilize the internet to promote their brand or ad. With an increase in social media ads can spread within minutes to countless viewers. I think they also waited just enough time where the trend is still fresh in people’s minds, but not too soon where it blends into the mass amounts of other ads also attempting to profit off the idea. By playing off an already popular trend, the Salvation Army ad tapped into success.
